Which, for most people won't mean much. So to put it into its modern 'administrative' context, the blog will cover the east end of the City of Hobsons Bay, and most of the City of Maribyrnong, in Melbourne.

Suburbs inside Cut Paw Paw parish include;
Williamstown, Newport, Altona North, Spotswood, South Kingsville, Yarraville, Brooklyn, Seddon, Kingsville, all the Footscrays, Maidstone, Braybrook, Sunshine, Sunshine North, and Maribyrnong.From time to time, we may also wander into Truganina parish, Maribyrnong parish, Douta Galla parish, or even Derrimut parish, as all these border Cut Paw Paw.
The blog is intended to highlight and uncover some of the parishes history and how it relates to its modern streetscapes and landmarks.
Highlighting life on the other side of Melbourne's 'other' river.
You may find some things here interesting, or already known. Either way, the blog hopes to shine some light on life now, and then.
It was also inspired by the 'Touch My History' segments that appear on 3RRR's Break-fasters moring radio show, and in helping +Stephen Downes (@Downesy, and also @BatmaniaRRR) with his concept for the 3RRR summer broadcasts of 'Batmania'.
That is, a casual, personal, and completely amateur pursuit of researching and sharing local Melbourne history.
And of course, if any readers would like to contribute ideas or their personal knowledge of the area, please feel free to leave a comment, or email to tkyc.mail@gmail.com. Thoughts, memories and knowledge should be shared.
I seriously thought Cut Paw Paw was a name the inventive Batmania crew had dreamed up - but there it is on the Parish map. Look forward to following explorations in the land of Paw Paw. How can anyone resist.
ReplyDeleteHi Janet.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by! I heard you on Batmania all those weeks back.
I had heard of other parish names before (i.e. Doutta Galla, as a pub/sports team name) but never realized it was more than that. Then I bought a house "in the parish of Cut Paw Paw" (as the documents of title stated) and thought ...WHAT?
So I just had to find out more... and then that lead to more etc... you may know that feeling.
Thanks for reading - more up soon!
